Paul Revere/"Midnite Ride" April18 1775
Historic Battle of Ironclads/civil war 1862

A minister dies & dressed in his finest collar & clerical robes, is waiting in line at the pearly gates,
just behind a man dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket & jeans.

Saint Peter addresses the man in the sunglasses, "WHO are you, so i may know whether or not to
admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?"

The man replies,"I'm Joe Green taxi driver, of New York City!".

Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles & says to the taxi driver,"Take this silken robe & golden staff, & enter into the Kingdom of Heaven."

The taxi driver goes into Heaven with his robe & staff, & now the minister is first in line before Saint Peter.

The minister without being asked, proclaims loudly, "I AM Joseph Snow, head pastor  of Saint Mary's for the last 43 years!"

Saint Peter consults his list. Looking up he says to the minister,"Take this cotton robe & wooden staff &
enter the Kingdom of heaven."

" Just a minute" protested an agitated minister. "That man was a taxi driver, & yet you issued him a silken robe & golden staff, but i get a cotton robe & wood for a staff. how can this be?"

Saint Peter replied "Up here, we work by results," While you preached,people slept;
while he drove, people prayed."

"ICE CREAM SUNDAE & THE WAITRESS"
IN THE DAYS WHEN AN ICE CREAM SUNDAE COST MUCH LESS, A 10 YEAR OLD BOY ENTERED A HOTEL COFFEE SHOP & SAT DOWN AT A TABLE. A WAITRESS PUT A GLASS OF WATER IN FRONT OF HIM. "HOW MUCH IS AN ICE CREAM SUNDAE?" HE ASKED. "FIFTY CENTS" REPLIED THE WAITRESS. THE LITTLE BOY PULLED HIS HAND OUT OF HIS POCKET & STUDIED THE COINS IN IT. "WELL HOW MUCH IS A PLAIN DISH OF ICE CREAM?" HE INENQUIRED. BY NOW MORE PEOPLE WERE WAITING FOR A TABLE & THE WAITRESS WAS GROWING IMPATIENT. "THIRTY FIVE CENTS" SHE BRUSQUELY REPLIED. THE LITTLE BOY AGAIN COUNTED HIS COINS.
"I WILL HAVE A PLAIN DISH OF ICE CREAM" HE SAID.

THE WAITRESS BROUGHT THE ICE CREAM, PUT THE BILL ON THE TABLE & WALKED AWAY. THE BOY FINISHED THE ICE CREAM,PAID THE CASHIER & LEFT.
WHEN THE WAITRESS CAME BACK, SHE BEGAN TO CRY AS SHE WIPED DOWN THE TABLE. THERE, PLACED NEATLY BESIDES THE EMPTY DISH, WERE 2 NICKELS & 5 PENNIES.

YOU SEE, HE COULDN'T HAVE THE SUNDAE, BECAUSE HE HAD TO HAVE ENOUGH LEFT TO LEAVE A TIP.
                                     "LITTLE BOY & HIS SISTER"
MANY YEARS AGO, WHEN I WORKED AS A VOLUNTEER AT A HOSPITAL, I GOT TO KNOW A LITTLE GIRL NAMED LIZ WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM A RARE & SERIOUS DISEASE. HER ONLY CHANCE OF RECOVERY APPEARED TO BE A BLOOD TRANSFUSION FROM HER 5 YEAR OLD BROTHER,WHO HAD MIRACULOUSLY SURRIVED THE SAME DISEASE & HAD DEVELOPED THE ANTIBODIES NEDDED TO COMBAT THE ILLNESS. THE DOCTOR EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO HER LITTLE BROTHER,& ASKED THE LITTLE BOY IF HE WOULD BE WILLING TO GIVE BLOOD TO HIS SISTER.

I SAW HIM HESITATE FOR ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE TAKING A DEEP BREATH & SAYING, " YES YES I WILL DO IT IF IT CAN SAVE HER." AS THE TRANSFUSION PROGRESSED, HE WAS IN A BED NEXT TO HIS SISTER & SMILED,AS WE ALL DID, SEEING THE COLOR RETURNING TO HER CHEEKS.
HIS FACE  GREW PALE & HIS SMILE FADED.

HE LOOKED UP AT THE DOCTOR & ASKED IN A TREMBLING VOICE, "WILL I START TO DIE RIGHT AWAY." BEING ONLY 5, THE LITTLE BOY HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THE DOCTOR;
HE THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO HAVE GIVE HIS SISTER ALL OF HIS BLOOD IN ORDER TO SAVE HER.

"MIDNITE RIDE OF PAUL REVERE" APRIL18,1775 & SURROUNDING EVENTS

PAUL REVERE SILVERSMITH,ENGRAVER,DENTURE MAKER & ICON OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR. 1735-1818.

IN 1775 DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE WAS MORE THAN A YEAR AWAY,THERE WAS NO CONTINENTAL CONGRESS,NO ARMY, NO UNITED STATES,ONLY 13 COLONYS & THEIR INHABITANTS.

3,000 BRITISH TROOPS WERE IN BOSTON MANY LIVING IN PRIVATE HOMES AGAINST THE WILL OF BOSTON'S CITIZENS UNDER THE "QUARTERING ACT",& HARSH ECONOMIC BLOCKADE ENACTED BY ENGLAND AS PUNISHMENT, IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE DECEMBER 1773 BOSTON TEA PARTY.
JOBS WERE SCARCE & BOSTON WAS SUFFERING FROM A SMALL POX EPIDEMIC.
ANIMOSITY BETWEEN THE BRITISH & INSURGENTS WAS HIGH & BEING FANNED TO GREATER HEIGHTS BY SAMUEL ADAMS & OTHER PATRIOT LEADERS.

AMONG LEADERS OF THE REVOLUTION WERE FIREBRAND SAMUEL ADAMS & WEALTHY MERCHANT JOHN HANCOCK. (FIRST TO SIGN THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.)

ADAMS & HANCOCK WERE BEHIND THE COLONIAL  MILITIAMEN WHO SEIZED OVER 100 BARRELS OF GUNPOWDER & ARMS IN A DARING RAID ON A BRITISH FORT IN NEW HAMPSHIRE IN 1774 WHICH WERE STORED IN A WAREHOUSE IN CONCORD MASS.

IN APRIL 1775 THOMAS GAGE BRITISH MILITARY GOVENOR OF MASS. ISSUED ORDERS TO ARREST OR KILL SAMUEL ADAMS & JOHN HANCOCK.

A PATRIOT RING LEADER DR. JOESEPH WARREN HAVING LEARNED THRU SPIES OF THE ORDERS TO CAPTURE OR KILL ADAMS & HANCOCK ISSUED ORDERS TO PATRIOTS
PAUL REVERE, JOESEPH DAWES (A LEATHER TANNER) & OTHER RIDERS. THEIR ORDERS & MISSION WAS TO WARN ADAMS & HANCOCK THAT BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE ON THE MOVE AND WOULD ALSO TRY TO  SEIZE  BRITISH GUNPOWDER STOLEN THE YEAR BEFORE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE & HIDDEN IN CONCORD MASS.

PAUL REVERE ARRANGED FOR THE NOW FAMOUS LANTERN SIGNAL TO BE HUNG FROM THE TOWER OF BOSTON'S OLD NORTH CHURCH "ONE IF BY LAND 2 IF BY SEA".

REVERE HUNG ONE LATERN AFTER LEARNING THAT 3,000 BRITISH REGULARS WERE MARCHING BY LAND TO CONCORD.
REVERE & DAWES BOTH STARTED OUT AROUND 11PM REACHING CONCORD BY DIFFERENT ROUTES WARNING ADAMS,HANCOCK & LOCAL MILITIA ALONG THE WAY.

WITH THE LOCAL MILITIA ALERTED THEY FORMED AT CONCORD BRIDGE TO BLOCK THE BRITISH. THIS LED TO THE FAMOUS "SHOT HEARD AROUND THE WORLD" ON APRIL 19,1775. WHO FIRED THE FIRST SHOT MILITIA OR BRITISH REGULAR IS A MYSTERY TO THIS DAY.

THE MILITIA RETREATED BEFORE THE BRITISH WHO SUFFERED HEAVY CASUALTYS FROM CONSTANT MUSKET FIRE FROM BEHIND STONE WALLS,TREE'S,SIDE'S OF ROADS ALL THE WAY BACK TO BOSTON. THE HEAVY LOSS'S SUFFERED BY VETERAN BRITISH TROOPS SHOCKED GENERAL GAGE & REVERBERATED CLEAR TO LONDON.
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION WAS UNDER WAY.

2 NOTES OF INTEREST ***THE OLD NORTH CHURCH STILL STANDS AS A LAND MARK HISTORIC MONUMENT & STOP ALONG THE FAMOUS FREEDOM TRAIL IN BOSTON.
IT CAN BE WALKED & ENJOYED WITH OR WITH OUT TOURIST GUIDE.

***PAUL REVERE A TRUE AMERICAN HERO WHO LIKE OTHER PATRIOTS RISKED IMPRISONMENT & DEATH FOR TREASON TO ENGLAND ALSO SERVED  & FOUGHT IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
HE WAS ACCUSED OF COWARDICE & ACQUITED AT A COURT MARTIAL IN IN 1782. HE WENT ON TO PROSPER IN HIS TRADE DYING IN 1818 AT THE AGE OF 83.

CIVIL WAR  " BATTLE OF THE IRON CLADS"

THE BATTLE WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT NAVAL BATTLE OF THE CIVIL WAR & SIGNALED THE END OF THE ERA OF WOODEN HULLED WAR SHIPS.
IT ALSO HAD MAJOR IMPACT IN NAVAL HISTORY NOT ONLY ON US BUT INTERNATIONALLY AS THE FIRST MEETING IN COMBAT OF IRONCLAD WARSHIPS.

THE BATTLE TOOK PLACE OVER 2 DAYS,MARCH 8-9 IN 1862 AT HAMPTON ROADS, VIRGINA WHERE THE ELIZABETH & NASEMOUND RIVERS  MEET THE JAMES RIVER JUST BEFORE IT ENTERS CHEASAPEAKE BAY.
HAMPTON ROADS IS A LARGE AREA THAT ENCOMPASES VIRGINA BEACH,(COLONIAL) WILLIAMSBURG,NORFOLK & JAMESTOWN WHICH ARE TODAY HISTORIC TOURIST ATTRACTIONS.

BACKGROUND
PRESIDENT LINCOLN ON APRIL 19,1861 SHORTLY AFTER THE OUT BREAK OF HOSTILITYS AT CHARLESTON IMPOSED A BLOCADE ON THE CONFEDERACY.
THE BATTLE WAS CAUSED  BY THE SOUTH ATTEMPTING TO BREAK THE BLOCKADE WHICH WAS STRANGLING THE SOUTH.
ON MARCH 8 THE IRON CLAD JUST BUILT VIRGINIA & SUPPORTING SHIPS ATTACKED THE UNION FLOTILLA OF  SEVERAL WOODHULLED SHIPS.
THE VIRGINIA DESTROYED 2 OF THE 5 UNION WAR SHIPS  & WAS HEADED TO DESTROY THE 3D & LARGEST THE FRIGATE USS MINNESOTA, WHICH HAD RUN AGROUND.  VIRGINIA UNWIELDLY WITH A DEEP DRAFT WAS FORCED TO WITHDRAW BY DARKNESS & FALLING TIDE.
THE VIRGINIA RETURNED THE NEXT MORNING ON MARCH 9 TO DESTROY THE MINNESOTA & END THE BLOCKADE.

BATTLE
UNBEKNOWN TO THE CONFEDERACY & THE VIRGINIA THE MONITOR NEWLY DESIGNED & CONSTRUCTED  BY SWEDISH ENGINEER & INVENTOR JOHN ERICSSON AT HIS SHIPYARD IN GREENPOINT BROOKLYN HAD BEEN RUSHED TO THE SCENE  & ARRIVED THE MORNING OF MARCH 9.
THE STAGE WAS NOW SET FOR THE HISTORIC CONFRONTATION.
THE VIRGINA ARRIVED AT DAWN TO CONTINUE THE ATTACK ONLY TO FIND ITSELF BLOCKED BY THE MONITOR.
VIRGINIA WAS UNAWARE IT WAS FACING AN IRON CLAD NAVAL WAR SHIP WHICH LOOKED LIKE A BOILER ON TOP OF BEING TOWED ON FLAT ONJECT.    THE FIRST SHOT WAS FIRED BY THE VIRGINA WHICH MISSED & STRUCK THE MINNESOTA.

MONITOR FIRED BACK & VIRGINIA SUDDENLY REALIZED WHAT SHE WAS FACING. THE FIGHTING WENT ON FOR HOURS.
NEITHER COULD OVERCOME THE OTHER BECAUSE OF THEIR ARMOUR & NOT BEING SUPPLIED WITH PROPER AMMUNITION OF ARMOUR PIERCING SHELLS(AVAILABLE AT TIME) TO GET THRU THE OTHERS ARMOUR.
WHILE IT IS TRUE THE BATTLE ENDED IN A DRAW WHEN BOTH SHIPS WITHDREW IT WAS ONLY BECAUSE EACH SIDE MISINTERPETED THE MOVES OF THE OTHER & BOTH SIDES CLAIMED VICTORY. *(EDITORS NOTE! THIS IS NOT AN INFREQUENT OCCURENCE IN REAL LIFE BATTLES OR WAR.)*
 "REAL STORY" OF THE BATTLE
**THE LITTLE KNOWN TRUTH** IS THE BATTLE ACTUALLY CEASED WHEN A LUCKY CHANCE SHELL FROM THE VIRGINIA HIT THE MONITOR PILOT HOUSE & EXPLODED DRIVING FRAGMENTS THRU THE VIEWING SLITS INJURING THE CAPT.JOHN WORDEN WHO WAS DIRECTING MOVEMENT &THE FIRING. THE MONITOR HAD TO DRAW AWAY INORDER TO REPLACE WORDEN,WITH THE EXEC.OFFICER LT.SAMUEL GREENE WHO  RETURNED THE MONITOR TO THE FIGHT.

BATTLE ENDS
HOWEVER THE CREW OF THE VIRGINA BELIEVING THE MONITOR HAD WITHDRAWN & BECAUSE OF THE FALLING TIDE & BELIEF THEY HAD WON WITHDREW & RETURNED TO BASE.
THE MONITOR SAW HER ADVERSAY LEAVING & WAS CONVINCED IT WAS QUITTING THE FIGHT. WITH ORDERS TO PROTECT THE MINNESOTA, ENFORCE THE BLOCKADE & NOT RISK THE SHIP UNNECESSARILY THERE WAS NO PURSUIT.

THUS ENDED THE BATTLE WITH THE 2 IRON CLADS WHO NEVER MEET IN BATTLE AGAIN. IN FACT NEITHER SURVIVED THE YEAR NEVER TO FIGHT AGAIN,WITH THE BLOCKADE STILL IN PLACE.

THE VIRGINA CAME TO ITS END FIRST. ON MAY 9,1982 UNABLE TO PASS UPRIVER BECAUSE OF ITS DEEP DRAFT IT WAS DESTROY OR BE CAPTURED.CREW WAS TAKEN ASHORE & MONITOR WAS SET ON FIRE & EXPLODED.

MONITOR CAME TO IS END ON CHRISTMAS DAY DEC 1982 WHEN IT WAS ORDERED TO BEAUFORT NORTH CAROLINA AID THE BLOCKADE THERE.
WHILE BEING TOWED IT RAN INTO HEAVY WIND & WAVES; WITH NO HIGH SIDES SHE TOOK ON WATER & THE MONITOR SANK GOING DOWN WITH LOSS OF 16 MEN IN THE EARLY HOURS OF DEC.31,1862.
* ED.NOTE! AFTER 111 YEARS UNDETECTED ON OCEAN FLOOR THE MONITOR WAS LOCATED BY A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS 16 MILE OFF CAPE HATTERAS IN 287 FEET OF WATER.

IN 1987 ,THE SITE WAS DECLARED A MARINE SANCTUARY,THE FIRST SHIP WRECK TO RECEIVE THIS DESIGNATION.
ITS INNOVATIVE TURRET,SREAM ENGINE,DAHLGREN GUNS,ANCHOR,PROPELLER & OTHER ARTIFACTS WERE RECOVERED.

**HISTORIC CHANGE IN NAVAL HISTORY **
THE BATTLE RECEIVED WORLDWIDE ATTENTION,& IT HAD IMMEDIATE EFFECTS ON
NAVIES AROUND THE WORLD.  IT SIGNALED THE DEATH KNELL OF THE WOODEN WARSHIP.

HISTORY OF NAVAL WARFARE CHANGED BY BATTLE OF THE IRON CLADS
THE PREEMINET NAVAL POWERS,ENGLAND & FRANCE, HALTED CONSTRUCTION OF ALL WOODEN HULLED SHIPS,& OTHERS FOLLOWED SUIT.
NEW TYPES OF WAR SHIPS WERE PRODUCED BASED ON THE MONITOR REVOLVING TURRET THAT COULD BE FIRED IN ANY DIRECTION WHICH BECAME THE STANDARD IN WARSHIPS OF THE FUTURE,& INSPIRED DESIGNS WHICH EVENTUALLY BECAME THE MODERN BATTLESHIP.
